Also, you may feel as if there was a veil or a glass wall between yourself and the world around you. You might feel as if you’re in a fog, a dream, or a bubble. You may also feel as if you’re not familiar with the world, inanimate objects, or your surroundings. If you’re coping with any debilitating or uncomfortable mental health symptoms, whether that’s depersonalization, anxiety, or otherwise, you don’t have to do this alone. Depersonalization episodes bring a sense of unreality or detachment. Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder involves periodic dissociative episodes in which a person becomes disconnected from themselves or their experiences. In learning how to process and cope with my depersonalization and other aspects of my anxiety, being open and honest with friends and talking to a counsellor have both been so important. Despite how unpleasant and scary the symptom can be, I respect and am grateful that my mind is trying to keep me safe. People who have depersonalization episodes walk around. Other symptoms and recurrent episodes of depersonalization disorders involve feeling like you’re in a dreamlike state where your thinking is cloudy or foggy. Depersonalizing is how my mind has done its best to try to protect itself with the tools it’s had available. People report depersonalization experience as observers in their own lives instead of active participants. It is a common symptom of severe anxiety, especially within specific anxiety. This perspective has also helped me to cultivate more self-compassion. Derealization is the feeling as though the reality around you is altered. Seeing depersonalization as an automatic and protective coping strategy, rather than as an explicitly hurtful side-affect of my anxiety, has helped change the way and frequency at which I experience episodes. They were starting to experience cynicism or depersonalization. When depersonalizing, your body is trying to get you out of a scary, possibly harmful situation by internally distancing you from it. Another thing that has really impacted how I see depersonalization has been reframing it as not a force of evil, but as a protective mechanism.
